The Midlife Do-Over: Tips for reinvention in the second half of life S. Verrall, September 10, 2023September 24, 2023 Contemplating a midlife do-over terrifies me. From the window of my 50-year-old cockpit, getting this retro-ass plane of mine off the ground seems impossible. However, it’s thoughts of falling from the sky that paralyze me from even trying. I suppose that’s what happens when you make an emergency landing at an airport called Ground Zero. I’m a mess. No job or financial security. No connections and nearby friendships. Homeless and hopeless. Obese and disheveled. Ground Zero airport sucks. However, the fear there’s not enough runway left to obtain the speed I need to fly out of this place might be the most soul crushing feeling of all. So what does a pilot of an older model plane do when he/she’s on a runway lacking length at the Ground Zero airport? Tips For A Midlife Do-Over: Starting over in midlife can be daunting, but it’s never too late to pursue new goals and dreams. Here are some tips to help you navigate this transition: 1. Self-Reflection: Take time to reflect on your passions, values, and what truly makes you happy. This self-awareness will guide your choices moving forward. 2. Start Small: Don’t be afraid to start with small steps or part-time work in your new field if necessary. Building momentum is more important than starting at the top. 8. Overcome Fear of Failure: Understand that setbacks and failures are a natural part of any journey. Embrace them as opportunities for growth and learning. 9. Seek Support: Talk to friends, family, or a therapist about your feelings and aspirations. Their support can be invaluable during this time. 10. Time Management: Efficiently manage your time by setting priorities and sticking to a schedule. Balance work, personal life, and self-care. 11.
